How the day of the year is calculated
The day-of-year number is simply the count of days from the start of the year to the date in question, inclusive of the start date. January 1 is day 1. If today is January 10, the day number is 10. By December 31 of a common year, the number reaches 365; in a leap year it reaches 366. The calculation above uses the UTC calendar date so the result is stable for an international audience.
Leap years and day numbers
A leap year adds February 29, which shifts every day number after February by one. In a leap year, March 1 is day 61 instead of day 60, and the year ends on day 366 rather than day 365. The rule for the Gregorian calendar is: a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except years divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. That is why 2024 was a leap year, 2025 is not, 2026 is not, and 2028 will be.
- 2024 — leap year, 366 days, day 366 = December 31, 2024.
- 2025 — common year, 365 days, day 365 = December 31, 2025.
- 2026 — common year, 365 days, day 365 = December 31, 2026.
- 2028 — leap year, 366 days, day 366 = December 31, 2028.
Why use UTC for the day number
The day number belongs to a calendar date, and a calendar date can be different on either side of midnight. If it is 23:00 on December 31 in Tokyo, it is already January 1 in New York, so the day number differs by 364 or 365 between those two places at the same instant. For that reason, this page reports the UTC date's day number — a single, unambiguous value that does not depend on where the reader is.
Day numbers and Unix time
A day number answers "which day of the year is this date?" while Unix time answers "how many seconds since 1970?" — and the two convert cleanly. Paste an epoch value into the free online epoch time converter and the date it names appears instantly; read the month and day off that date and you have the day number for any instant. To go the other way, the date to epoch converter turns a calendar date back into a Unix timestamp.
Where the day-of-year number shows up
Day-of-year numbers are used in a lot of places, even when you do not notice them:
- Progress tracking — "we are 60% through the year" is really a day-number question.
- Reporting and planning — fiscal or project timelines are sometimes expressed as day numbers.
- Logs and data exports — some systems record a day-of-year field alongside a timestamp.
- Science and astronomy — the ordinal day is a compact way to name a date without a month.
If you just need to know "what day of the year is it" right now, the cards above already have the answer. For the full table — every day of a given year with its day number, date, and week number — use the links below.
Full day-number tables by year
Each year has its own page listing every day with its day number, the calendar date, and the ISO week number. Pick the year you need:
- Day numbers for 2024 (leap year, 366 days)
- Day numbers for 2025 (common year, 365 days)
- Day numbers for 2026 (common year, 365 days)
- Day numbers for 2027 (common year, 365 days)
- Day numbers for 2028 (leap year, 366 days)
Day of the year vs week number
The day-of-year number counts days from January 1. The week number counts weeks from the start of the year under ISO 8601 — week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday. A date's day number and its week number are related but not the same: day 1 is not always in week 1, and a year can have 52 or 53 weeks. Use the current week number page when you need the week, and this page when you need the day.
Example day numbers
- January 1, 2026 → day 1 of 2026 (Monday).
- February 1, 2026 → day 32 of 2026 (Sunday).
- March 1, 2026 → day 60 of 2026 (Sunday), because 2026 is not a leap year.
- June 1, 2026 → day 152 of 2026 (Monday).
- Today (Sep 18, 2026 (Fri)) → day 261 of 2026.
